The Hapsburgs built a palace in Innsbruck in the fourteenth century. Over three hundred years later this residence of the Hapsburgs was painted yellow because that was the favorite color of Empress Maria Theresa. Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna is also a dazzling yellow color.

Innsbruck’s famous Golden Roof is actually of 2,657 gilded copper shingles. From this balcony Emperor Maximilian would watch over proceedings in the town. If you look very closely you can even see him in the two sculpted panels beneath the balcony. In the one on the left, he is with his first and second wives, Maria of Burgundy and Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan.
